Review roundup for 2x04, Basic Rocket Science

Hi, everyone! myr_soleil wasn't able to do the review roundup this week, so I will do my best to fill her shoes. And holy cow, there were a lot of reviews to work through this week. But it's good to see it getting the attention, so I won't complain.

  • Jace Jacob at Televisionary loved the episode so much that he posted his review last Wednesday, eight days before it aired. His only complaint: "This winning episode was so swiftly paced that it felt extremely short." He also posted a video review at TV Squad.

  • The episode "didn’t click" for Todd VanDerWerff of the A.V. Club as well as the other episodes this season have. He thinks it got "too hung up on its source material" and suffered from "a lack of character focus." He still gave it a B though.

  • Similarly, Alan Sepinwall of HitFix said the episode "definitely worked ... on the comedy end of things" but "on the character front [it] fell short of the very high bar set by 'Modern Warfare.'"

  • M.L. House of TVFanatic.com said "the episode relied on its premise more than its characters" but allowed that "it was still funnier than any CBS sitcom."

  • Kona Gallagher of CliqueClack was bothered by the "flimsy plot device" (referring to Annie's professed desire to transfer to City College) that led to the study group being trapped in the simulator but was willing to overlook it since the rest of the episode was "hilarious." She also loved the flag.

  • Michelle at Daemon's TV also thought the plot device of Annie wanting to transfer not entirely convincing, and like several others pointed out that "there [wasn't] much in the way of ... character development," but praised the pacing and the creativity of the writers.

  • The TV Obsessed gave the episode a rating of 9.2 out of 10 and called it "a goldmine of laughs," but observed that it lacked the "characters and conflicts" of "Modern Warfare."

  • Corey Sherman of TV Guide called it "another great spoof episode from our favorite community college study group," and singled out Leonard in the simulator simulator as particularly hilarious.

  • The promotional consideration given to KFC bothered Rohan Ramakrishnan of ScreenCrave. "It was hard to shake the feeling that we were watching a 30-minute-long commercial." However, he praised Chevy Chase's performance and was happy to see Jim Rash get so much screen time.

  • Drew Stewart of Television Blend believes Community "is at its best when it creates ... genre movie parodies" such as "Contemporary American Poultry" and "Modern Warfare" and thus has "no reservations in saying 'Basic Rocket Science' is ... one of the best episodes of the series’ run." He thought Britta and Shirley got short shrift, though.

  • The only out-and-out pan came from Noel at Monsters of Television, who called it "one of the weakest episodes the show has done in a while," citing the lack of long-term "character impact," an over-reliance on Dean Pelton, and the randomness of Annie's reasons for betraying the group. He did like S.A.N.D.E.R.S. though, calling it "easily my favorite portion of the episode."

  • Zack Handlen of TV Squad called it "a problematic episode, because it put a willingness to go for references and jokes over character," but conceded that it was "entertaining, and had some great sight gags," making it "easier to overlook the flaws."

  • Jennifer Boies of examiner.com "loved it" and gave the episode five stars out of five.

  • "It’s a fun romp," writes Meg in the Two Cents Corp. blog, "but I think it tries a smidge too hard to be 'epic,'" suggesting that the references and gags seemed more important than the storytelling.

  • Alison Dingeldein of the Los Angeles Times Show Tracker blog describes the episode as "a hilarious salute to space films," calling it "what great TV is made of." She also says that in the "intergalactic battle" between Community's space-movie parody and Big Bang Theory's stunt casting of George Takei and Katee Sackhoff, the former was the winner. (She also owns up to missing last week's Abed storyline.)

  • In her preview of the episode, Megan Masters of E! Online called the episode "really is the best way to spend your Thursday." She identifies the performances of Donald Glover and Jim Rash as standouts.

  • Likewise, Christopher Rosen of Movieline calls Donald Glover "the MVP of Community’s second season" and "a comedy wizard." He called the episode "a pitch-perfect homage" and "a worthy stepsister to 'Modern Warfare.'"

  • Kelsea Stahler of Hollywood.com liked that they managed to get through the entire episode without making any reference to Apollo 13's most famous line: "Houston, we have a problem." (Christopher Rosen mentioned that too.)

  • Daniel Carlson of the Houston Press called the episode "hilarious and lightning-fast," and praises the series for taking the time in its first to firmly establish an emotional connection to the characters, allowing them to do more wacky high-concept episodes like this one. He also enjoyed both of Chang's small moments. But like several others, he thought Annie's desire to transfer was "a little sudden ... even for a show as mercurial as this one."

  • And continuing with that same theme, Andy Greenwald of New York magazine's Vulture blog says Annie's wanting to transfer "seemed stapled on from another, more recognizably human plot." But that was also the only negative thing he had to say about the episode, which he praised for "its contagious sense of unbridled fun."

Ratings-wise, the show was way up in the fast overnights, jumping 16% vs. last week to a 2.2 adults 18-49 ratings, coming in third behind The Big Bang Theory and Bones. (Via TV By the Numbers.)
