3. 21 — The First Chang Dynasty

Character development: Chang
Chang has always been a difficult character to peg. His charm (or lack of it) can vary from episode to episode, and his level of crazy is just unbelievable. Let's discuss how Chang works as a member of the Greendale community by looking at these episodes: 1.02, 1.11, 1.13, 1.18, 1.24, 2.01, 2.12, 2.13, 2.19, 2.21, 2.22, 3.01, 3.03, 3.12, 3.15, 3.18. Or why don't you cite your own nominee for most bizarro Chang moment. (EDIT: Did I say 1.11? I meant 1.10 - Environmental Science. I CAN'T leave out Chang dancing to Greene Daeye's version of Somewhere Out There.)

  • What are Chang's biggest motivations? How do you see them impacting the plot of the past seasons?
  • Do you have a favorite Chang personality? Which Chang do you want to see again?
  • Did Chang's status as a former Greendale faculty limit the kind of relationships he could form with the other Greendale students and faculty?
  • You've seen Chang as both adversary and ally (of sorts) of the study group. Do you think there is ever a chance that they would remain friends?

Character study:
  • Is it possible that the study group would not have tried to save the Dean? What would have happened to Greendale then?
  • What is your theory on how Chang's army gained the upper hand at Greendale?
  • Who do you think came up with the idea of an Ocean's Eleven-type elaborate heist?
  • Discuss: "Love is not admissible evidence."
  • Whose disguise do you like best?

Other questions:
  • Favorite line and scene?
  • Anything else you'd like to discuss?

Character development: Chang

What are Chang's biggest motivations? How do you see them impacting the plot of the past seasons?

Chang just wants some semblance of control. He was insanely controlling as a teacher, he wanted into the study group so he could be part of one of the most influential groups in the school, and as a security guard he reached a position where he actually had control and let it get out of control. I can see this continuing, but it'll be interesting to see how they continue to keep him involved in season 4.

Do you have a favorite Chang personality? Which Chang do you want to see again?

I really enjoyed Teacher Chang. He was crazy, but he was pigeonholed into just one area of their lives. He was less omnipresent, which I think is a good for a character like Chang who is best in small doses.

Did Chang's status as a former Greendale faculty limit the kind of relationships he could form with the other Greendale students and faculty?

I don't think 'limits' are really a concern for the Greendale faculty; see: Dean Pelton and Jeff, or Jeff and Michelle.

You've seen Chang as both adversary and ally (of sorts) of the study group. Do you think there is ever a chance that they would remain friends?

At the beginning of the season Jeff showed a willingness to be Chang's friend, but then Chang went totally insane and got them expelled, so no.

Character study:

Is it possible that the study group would not have tried to save the Dean? What would have happened to Greendale then?

Naw, I think they were always going to help him. They leapt to it pretty quickly as soon as they realized there was a problem. If he wasn't 'saved' Greendale eventually would have gone broke due to Chang's rule. Or someone would realize that the Dean wasn't the Dean and put out a missing person's report. He MUST have someone in his life that noticed he was gone... then again, maybe he didn't. POOR DEAN! I just thought of this. I want to give him a hug.

What is your theory on how Chang's army gained the upper hand at Greendale?

An example was made of the Study Group, basically saying "If you go against Chang, he literally has the power to ruin your life," so that's probably how he managed to get people to do what he wanted.

Who do you think came up with the idea of an Ocean's Eleven-type elaborate heist?

It was probably a big group mish-mash, led by Abed, Troy and Jeff.

Discuss: "Love is not admissible evidence."

I want to see that Copera. Policical?

Whose disguise do you like best?

Umm, see virtual_toast's comment for my feelings on this matter. Holy hell, abs.

Other questions:

Favorite line and scene?

"The answer's simple... we just have to plan an elaborate heist!"

Scene: Again, see virtual_toast's comment for my feelings on this.

Anything else you'd like to discuss?

I'm going to point you one more time to virtual_toast's comment....

Ooh, I'm not the only one! Yeah, I'm... fine with this Chang, but I kind of liked season one Chang best. Everything you said is what I think.

What are Chang's biggest motivations? How do you see them impacting the plot of the past seasons?
he is crazy,he has no motivations besides egomsnia.his craziness had a huge impact, since it got the group expelled, drove them insane during the first year, and almost endagered their fabric with getting Shirley preganant and his constant need to be part of the gang.

Do you have a favorite Chang personality? Which Chang do you want to see again?
i'm one of those who miss teacher Chang.he was crazy but more tolerable, the perfect balance between patethic but not too much and psychopath.

Did Chang's status as a former Greendale faculty limit the kind of relationships he could form with the other Greendale students and faculty?
absolutely.he was so mean as a teacher with his student and colleagues, that he can't bond with them now that he's mr nobody.

You've seen Chang as both adversary and ally (of sorts) of the study group. Do you think there is ever a chance that they would remain friends?
no,they're barely friends now.he just intrudes, but it's not like the group asks for him to be there,he just happens to be everywhere and they made peace with it,sort of.

Character study:

Is it possible that the study group would not have tried to save the Dean? What would have happened to Greendale then?
no,the Dean loves them too much and they would return the favour anytime. But if they didn't,Chang would have screwed everything up,probably getting the school on fire or doing some major mistake, getting arrested by the police.

What is your theory on how Chang's army gained the upper hand at Greendale?
like many crazy dictators did,Chang had persuasion, drive and threats.so he made it possible.

Who do you think came up with the idea of an Ocean's Eleven-type elaborate heist?
Abed.i bet he was just waiting for it to happen.

Discuss: "Love is not admissible evidence." i think that's just what the officer meant, they needed solid material proofs.

Whose disguise do you like best? see the gif above.

I have to agree with wrathofdon and think they went too far exaggerating some of the characters and Chang is a perfect example of this. S1 Chang and S2 Chang were not this stupid or crazy. It doesn't seem like character development to me so much as it does character derailment. This may or may not be relevant to this but there was something I noticed when rewatching this episode. Chang is established to be deathly afraid of frogs in the Season One episode "Science Of illusion" and yet he had his stooge Joshua invite the Budweiser frogs to his birthday party. As for him being friends with the group, I can't even see how the writers are going to include his character on a regular basis considering what he did.
